The 1981 edition (now out of print) of this little classic on puppy rearing was a word-of-mouth best seller. This substantially revised and expanded edition benefits from an additional decade of observation of puppy behavior by its authors and includes effective, up-to-date methods for educating puppies to become good canine citizens. Along with Job Michael Evans's The Evans Guide for Housetraining Your Dog (Howell, 1987), this is required reading for new puppy owners. Whether the copy still in circulation is battered and gnawed or the book slipped by the first time around, every public library should acquire this new edition, and academic libraries should seriously consider it for its insights into canine behavior. Highly recommended.
Before and After Getting Your Puppy
The star of the British television show Dogs with Dunbar has been teaching pet owners to train their dogs humanely and thoroughly for over 30 years. In this compassionate and honest volume, the veterinarian shares his definitive opinions about the way dogs should be trained. This is a great tool that anyone who wants to get a dog should peruse before they bring their pup home because, as the author points out, owning a dog is a big responsibility, and "millions of dogs are euthanized each year simply because their owners did not know how to housetrain or chewtoy-train them." Dunbar includes information that prospective dog owners should know before they select a puppy, and he also explains how to meet his proscribed series of important Developmental Deadlines (two of which come up even before the dog reaches its new home!). In addition to a step-by-step guide to every stage of puppyhood, the book includes practical services, such as a pre-puppy shopping list and lists of the best dog training books and videos.
There's a Puppy in the House
Mike Wombacher's second book, "There's a Puppy in the House" is the latest and best guide to raising your puppy available anywhere. It leaves literally no topic relevant to puppy raising untouched. Written in an easy and engaging style, it includes an in-depth look at housebreaking, covers every area of concern for new puppy owners including home manners, socializing, obedience training and much much more. Unlike any other book on the market, this book contains a day by day, week by week timeline explaining exactly how and when to introduce the exercises in this book. It also contains over 200 photos and illustrations (more than any other puppy book) to clearly demonstrate how to perform every exercise discussed. It's also heavily cross referenced for ease of use and filled with dozens of resources to other areas of puppy raising and dog training. The layout of the book makes it exceedingly easy to find the topics you're looking for in short order and the advice itself is simple, direct and easy to implement. In short, this is a user friendly, highly functional guide to maximizing the joys of puppy ownership while minimizing its frustrations.
Your Outta Control Puppy
This is one of the most comprehensive and helpful books on puppy behavior and training I have read over the years. It touches upon all of the puppy traits that new owners have the most problems with, i.e. biting, jumping, acting like a maniac, etc. It explains what is normal and what is not for those of us who forget what a "normal" puppy acts like. Most training books are for all ages of dogs; this book is specifically for the puppy. The advice is great and easy to follow. The format and photographs are top quality.
How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks
Fun training with toys, treats, lures and rewards. Easy and effective, dog-friendly techniques for teaching a new puppy old tricks (such as basic manners), or for teaching an older dog that is new to training. Heralded by many dog trainers as 'the best dog training book ever written'. A comprehensive workbook for the motivated dog owner, comprising sections on basic off-leash obedience, temperament modification, behavior troubleshooting, training theory and health care. The definitive text for lure/reward training philosophy.
