The Griffon attracts attention by his almost humanlike, quizzical expressions. He is an intelligent cheerful dog with a terrier-like disposition. It is affectionate, willful and high-strung, but charming. Lively and curious, they love everyone, but can get quite moody. Unusually sensitive and quite demanding, this breed loves to be spoiled. It must be raised in the house with the family. The Griffon is good with other dogs and even with cats. These dogs may be gluttonous or picky eaters and perhaps difficult to housebreak. They make good watchdogs and can be taught to perform tricks. They do best with older considerate children. They make a fine companion dog.
The Griffon is a sturdy toy dog of square proportions with a domed head, undershot jaw, very short nose and lustrous eyes. The head is large in comparison to the body. The Brussels Griffon has a reddish-brown semi-long, wiry coat and dishevelled with fringe around the face.
The size is approximately 26 cm. The weight is approximately 4 kg. It has a beard and moustache. The eye is very large, black and round. The eyes must isolated and projecting. The ears are half-lines. The tail is cut to the two-thirds.
The Belgian griffon has exactly the same characteristics as those of the Brussels griffon with this difference that the permitted colors are black; black and tan; and black and reddish brown mixed.
The characteristics of the "Petit Brabançon" are the same as those of the Belgian Griffon, with the difference being in coat. The Small Brabant has a short, smooth coat. The permitted colors are the reddish brown and black and tan. It often has a black mask.
The Small Brabant is not a griffon because which says "griffon" thinks harsh, wiry, semi-long and dishevelled hair.
The rough hair is a structure of hair which is difficult to keep rough. To maintain the rough hair correct, one calls upon the close-cropped hair. That does not have anything exceptional, think of retemperings of our Laekenois by Malinois.
The two types of hair and the three colors (reddish -brown, black and black and tan) can meet in each litter.
(AKC recognizes only the breed known as the Brussels Griffon but allows all of the colours, black through red, as well as the smooth coat (Small Brabant).FCI, conversely, divided them into three breeds: Brussels Griffon, Belgian Griffon and Small Brabant).
