The Mudi is a rare herding dog breed from Hungary. The Mudi is truly a rare dog. The few owners who employ and favor the Mudi find him incomparable. His seemingly unending list of talents combined with his pleasant disposition makes him a top dog among canines. His proud owners reveal that as rare as he is, a moody Mudi is even more scarce. Highly intelligent, they can learn as quickly as border collies or even faster. Keep in mind that they like to feel independent. Extremely powerful and courageous, the Mudi is afraid of nothing, not even wild boar, which it can overpower quickly. It makes a good guard dog.

It is very loving and gentle in the family and has therefore gained appreciation as a companion dog that, if the need arises, will defend both property and person. Within the family it also has a tendency to bond with one particular person. Mudis do not trust strangers. They will not come up to a stranger until it sees that the person is friendly and doesn't want to hurt it. They are not aggressive when they meet someone they do not know; they just need to get accustomed to them. They will do okay with children if they are raised with them from puppyhood. Mudi are friendly with other dogs and will be okay with non-canine pets if they are raised with them from puppyhood or properly introduced as a new pet in the home. It is an obedient and playful companion, but can sometimes be noisy.

Medium sized breed of Shepherd Dog type. The head is wedge shaped and tapers towards the nose. Prick ears. Body topline is distinctly sloping towards the rear. The head and the limbs are covered by short, smooth coat. The other part of the body have a somewhat longer, very wavy to slightly curly coat. There are different variations of colours. The breed came into being during the 18th to the 19th century from cross breeding Hungarian herding dogs most probably with various prick eared German Shepherd Dogs.

Mudis usually weigh 18 to 29 pounds (8 to 13 kg) and stand 15 to 19 inches (38 to 47 cm) high at the withers. The coat is medium wavy or curly, with short hair on the face and legs. The accepted colors are black, ashen, brown, white, fawn, and merle. Herding dog. Because of his courageous disposition he is very popular with the shepherds for the use of herding large and difficult livestock. He is even used for the battue of wild boar. Excellent guard and companion dog. A dog used for searching out drugs. Watch and alarm dog. Excellent agility dog, loveable house pet. Because of his relatively short coat and his excellent adaptability, it is no problem to keep him in the house.

Temperament: The Mudi is a versatile farm dog that can hunt, exterminate rodents, and act as a capable herding dog and flock guardian. Although the breed is much less popular than the better-known Puli and Komondor breeds in its native country, owners of the Mudi claim that he is incomparable for his versatile talents and pleasant disposition.
