The Norbottenspets is a small, tightly-built breed of dog of the spitz type. It is an ancient breed whose original purpose was a farm and hunting dog but has recently became more popular as a companion dog.
Hailing from Sweden, the Norrbottenspets is a member of the Spitz family of dogs. Originally used to hunt small game and as an all-purpose farm dog, today this dog is mostly bred to be an affectionate companion. The Norrbottenspets excels at a type of hunting called tree barking and is therefore a very vocal animal. Similar in appearance to the Finnish Spitz and the Norwegian Lundehund, the Norrbottenspets is sometimes referred to as the Nordic Spitz.
Appearance: The Norrbottenspets should be agile yet powerful in appearance. It is neither heavily nor lightly built, but somewhere in between those extremes. Males are noticiably more masculine than females, who are smaller and of lighter build. It should give the impression of being alert, sprightly, and intelligent. It is "square" in build, meaning that its height at the withers should be the same as the length of its body.
The Norrbottenspets stands up to 18 inches tall at the shoulder. He has a thick, straight, hard double coat that provides good all-weather protection. Unlike most other Nordic breeds, the Norrbottenspets' coat is short. Ideally, his coat is white with yellow or red/brown markings, but all colours are permitted. Even with regular combing, he will shed! Like other members of the Spitz family, the Norrbottenspets has naturally erect ears, a pointed muzzle, and carries his tail curled up over his back.
Although small, the Norrbottenspets is a strong, compact, and alert dog. A member of the Hounds Group of dogs, the Norrbottenspets is happiest when his high-spirited nature can be channeled into having a job to do. He does best when involved in hunting, high obedience, search and rescue, or tracking. He is swift, agile, persistent, and has a high level of endurance. The Norrbottenspets is very social and needs to be a member of the family. He is very good with children.
Considered a rare breed, the Norrbottenspets is virtually unknown in North America. However, his lovable and self-confident nature makes him a wonderful companion. His excellent hunting instincts make him an ideal partner for the sports hunter. The Norrbottenspets is a fast learner and respects firm leadership. As an active dog, the Norrbottenspets requires regular outdoor exercise.
Coat and colour: The coat is hard, straight, dense, and lies close to the body. It must always have a double coat, and the under-coat is softer than the outer-coat. Colour is considered immaterial when being judged at a dog show, though white with orange, brown, or tan markings is the most common colour and is generally thought to be
favourable.
Size: The height is 42 to 46cm (16.5 to 18in). The weight is approximately 11 to 15kg (24 to 33lb) for males, and 8 to 12kg (18 to 27lb) for females.
