The Smalandsstovare (also known as Smalands Hound) is a breed of dog that originated in Sweden in the 1500s.
Thought to be the oldest scent hound breed in Sweden, it was first recognized by the Swedish Kennel Club in 1921.
The Smalandsstovare typically weights between 33 and 40 pounds, and stands 17 - 20 inches tall. The coat is typically black with tan markings, similar to those of a Rottweiler.

Like the Schillerhound, the Sma'landsstovare is a Swedish hound that traces its roots back to ancient periods. They were probably used as far back as the Middle Ages. The hound of Sm£-lands is indigenous to central Sweden and possesses some singular physical traits.

Although the occasional hock-length tail is conceded, it is universally born (never docked) with a short tail; no other scenthound sports the short version. The head is shorter and more wedge-shaped than most hounds, with the ears very small and flat; the body is cobby and small, all of which indicate that a long-ago cross of hounds to native Nordic-type dogs may have occurred to produce this breed. But he has keen scenthound abilities and is used in all terrain and weather for trailing game. They are most commonly employed in the hunting of fox and hare throughout the dense forest of Smalands district in southern Sweden.

The Smalandsstovare originated in Sweden in the 1200s. They were recognized by the Swedish Kennel Club in 1921. An early breeder, Baron von Essen, had a preference for the short-tailed individuals that were sometimes born, and helped to establish this trait in the breed. The basic form of this breed may date back to the Middle Ages.

Docking of the tail is not permiteed in the Smalandsstovare, but many are born without their tails. This breed also requires a great deal of excercise. They should be between 18-20 inches tall and weigh 33-40 pounds. Another name for the Smalandsstovare is the Smalands Hound.
