It is still used as a herder but is also a comapnion dog. It weighs 23-41 kgs and is about 51-60 cms in height. It maybe in a variety of colours.
The Himalayan Sheep Dog is found in India and Nepal, and there are two varieties of the breed: the longhaired and the shorthaired. The coat usually occurs in black or brown with white markings on the ears, legs and body. Himalayan sheepdog breeders can show you many photos of the breed.
These animals are very adept at managing livestock, and are protective around their loved ones and cattle. They never show unprovoked violence and can get along with other pets. They are not recommended for city life, because they need constant herding practice.
This very old breed is probably closely related to the forerunners of the large mountain dogs, which spread from north India over central Asia into Turkey and then to Europe. The Himalayan Sheepdog is a very effective flock guardian. Today, the use of this breed as a sheepdog has decreased greatly.
